Suffering from a sore throat? There are lots of chemicals you can purchase over the counter that promise to make you feel better – but if you’re looking to soothe, why not use one of the many natural alternatives? For generations going back thousands of years, if not longer, humans have used natural ingredients to help soothe sore throats and cope with a number of other medical problems, and many of the natural remedies are still used today.
Whether it’s old or new, a natural remedy is often far more effective, and by using them, you’ll know exactly what you’re consuming. Take a look at this extensive list of simple, natural remedies for a sore throat and see if any tickle your fancy
1 – Salt water
This is probably one of the simplest natural remedies for a sore throat around. Take a cup of warm water and add half a teaspoon of salt. Stir until the salt is completely dissolved and then gargle the water three times a day.
Gargling salt water helps reduce swelling in your throat by drawing water out from the tissue. It’s surprisingly effective
2 – Cinnamon tea
Love tea? Add some cinnamon sticks first and you’ll have a tasty drink that helps reduce the amount of mucus produced in your throat.
By boiling cinnamon sticks in water, before adding an herbal tea of your choice, you can create a delicious drink that allows you to breathe more easily. Boiling cinnamon sticks in the water before adding the tea is the best method, though you can also add cinnamon powder to your tea if you wish
3 – Sage water
Take a cup of boiling water and pour that water into a mug that contains two teaspoons of fresh or dried sage leaves. Cover it up and let it brew for around 20 minutes, before taking off the lid, stirring in a small pinch of salt. This tonic can then be used to gargle, drawing out inflammation with the salt, and allowing the sage to contract the tissues in your throat.
4 – Ginger tea
Another great tea for your throat is ginger tea. This root has been used for hundreds of years as a medicinal product, and it works amazingly well for your throat. Simply boil sliced and crushed ginger in water for five minutes, add a little honey and let it steep for a while before drinking. It’s delicious, good for you and soothes your throat.
5 – A spoonful of honey
Along with salt water, this is one of the simplest natural remedies for a sore throat. It won’t cure the bad throat or get rid of the infection, but it feels great. The honey forms a lining on the inside of your throat, soothing you for a while.
6 – Hydrogen peroxide
Yes, it’s not something you want to consume – but that doesn’t mean you can’t gargle it! Take one small cap of 3% hydrogen peroxide and combine it with a cup of fresh drinking water. Mix and make sure it seems diluted enough, before gargling the liquid and spitting it out again. The chemicals will help kill the bacteria causing the sore throat!
7 – Chew a clove
Chewing on a clove and sucking the flavour until it becomes soft is a great way of numbing your throat. Cloves act as a natural anesthetic, helping reduce pain. Chewing the clove also distracts you from any discomfort or pain, too!
Swallowing the clove when you’re done does no harm, and some people like to have a glass of water as they chew – but it’s really up to you. Give it a go and see how surprisingly well it works!
8 – Baking soda
This is a bizarre one, but it works. Baking soda can be used to help ease skin irritations as well as irritations on tissue. Combine a cup of warm (almost hot) water with half a teaspoon of baking soda and half a teaspoon of salt. Mix it up and gargle this solution three times a day. The salt and baking soda combine to reduce inflammation by drawing water out from the inside of your throat, and easing the irritation caused by the infection.
9 – Apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is used for pretty much everything these days, and it’s great! Using apple cider vinegar with a tablespoon of honey and a cup of very warm water creates a tonic that you can drink. This tonic does have quite an intense taste, but some people really enjoy it.
The acidity from the vinegar helps kill off the bacteria causing the infection, and the honey lines the inside of your throat and helps with the pain and irritation.
Whether you drink or gargle this tonic, be sure to do it twice a day. Over a matter of days you will see quite a significant improvement, making your throat feel far more comfortable.
10 – Chew on some garlic
Chewing garlic won’t give you nice breath, but it can help with your sore throat. Garlic is naturally great at killing bacteria, making this a perfect natural remedy for things like strep throat. Bacterial infections can be slowly killed through chewing on a small clove of garlic from time to time.
Be sure to gently crush the garlic as you chew it so that the allicin within it will mix with your saliva and kill the bacteria in your mouth and throat.
11 – Inhale steam
Make a huge bowl of boiling water and hold your face close to the water. Put a towel over your head and the bowl and breath in as much steam as you can. This will help get rid of congestion and leave you breathing more easily. You can even add some eucalyptus oil for an even more powerful effect.
12 – Cayenne pepper and honey
Definitely an odd combination, but a half teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder combined with a teaspoon of honey and a cup of boiling water makes a hot tonic that relieves pain and soothes at the same time.
